@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ 1.Da Emergency Positivo incontro a Kabul Nella giornata del 2 luglio 2000 rappresentanti di Emergency si sono incontrati a Kabul con Mohammad Abass Akhund, Ministro della Sanità del governo che controlla gran parte dell'Afganistan. Nel corso dell'incontro - che fa seguito a uno analogo del febbraio scorso - si è raggiunta un'intesa per la costruzione e l'apertura di un Centro chirurgico di EMERGENCY nella città di Kabul. Il Centro, che sarà costruito anche grazie al sostegno della Cooperazione italiana e UNDP, sarà operativo entro l'anno e fornirà assistenza chirurgica ai feriti del conflitto afgano e ai molti altri pazienti che necessitano chirurgia plastico ricostruttiva, soprattutto in età pediatrica (malformazioni ortopediche, pazienti affetti da poliomielite, ustionati ecc.). Nello scorso anno Emergency ha costruito e dal dicembre 1999 conduce un ospedale ad Anabah, nella valle del Panshir, nella zona settentrionale dell'Afganistan non controllata dai Talibani. A partire dalla giornata di sabato 1 luglio, sono ripresi con particolare violenza i combattimenti tra le due parti, che finora non hanno trovato le condizioni e i termini per un'intesa che ponga termine a questa ennesima guerra afgana. Nelle prime ore di questi ulteriori scontri, nel Centro chirurgico di Anabah sono stati ricoverati più di cinquanta feriti gravi. Sempre più consistenti i movimenti della popolazione che abbandona i luoghi maggiormente coinvolti dai combattimenti. Si viene così aggravando il già insostenibile fenomeno degli sfollati nel nord, mentre nel sud del paese la popolazione conosce le conseguenze di una terribile carestia. Nel proporsi nell'essere accolta per portare contemporaneamente aiuto umanitario a entrambe due parti in guerra, Emergency non si trasforma certo in un operatore diplomatico o politico, ma testimonia -oltre alla necessità e alla speranza - anche la possibilità della pace e una via, quella umanitaria, per ricercarla e costruirla. L'accordo di pace siglato esattamente un anno fa (7 luglio 1999) a Lome' tra il governo della Sierra Leone e il Fronte Rivoluzionario Unito (RUF) non ha portato ne' la pace ne' la fine delle violazioni dei diritti umani. Amnesty International chiede all'Unione Europea di: · rafforzare i controlli per il rispetto dell'embargo ONU sul materiale bellico diretto al RUF e di garantire che le armi e l'addestramento forniti all'esercito governativo non diventino strumenti di violazioni dei diritti umani; · sollecitare l'istituzione di una commissione d'inchiesta internazionale sugli abusi commessi prima e dopo l'accordo di pace e contribuire al rafforzamento del sistema giudiziario della Sierra Leone; · controllare che il commercio dei diamanti non finisca per finanziare il RUF; · intensificare l'assistenza a rifugiati e sfollati (ormai almeno 200mila). CALLED BY Close Down Harmondsworth Campaign 0208 571 5019 National Civil Rights Movement 0208 843 2333 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------- Oakington 7 convicted Seven protesters who blocked the road outside Oakington detention centre on the day it opened, were convicted at Cambridge Magistrates' court on the 27th June for sitting in the road on the first day of operation of the detention centre on March 20. The seven were initially charged with obstruction of the highway, then when it turned out that the road they were sitting on was in fact a private road and not a public highway, the charge was very vindictively changed to obstruction of a police officer (and the evidence conveniently added to in order to fit the new charge). Although the seven had a very strong legal defence, and also brought in lots of evidence about the illegality and imhumanity of imprisoning asylum seekers, they were duly convicted. Each of them were given a 200 fine, and ordered to pay 50 court costs.
