Balcani: confini in pericolo?
SPEA - Arch.Alexis Kilismanis
Venerdi`, 16 Aprile 1999 ore 18:00

In Grecia sono molto sensibili al problema dei confini ed il rischio che
possano essere nuovamente ridisegnati attraverso il dilagarsi dei
conflitti.

2) Opposition leader attacks government

Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Costas Karamanlis on Friday
strongly criticised the leaderships of European Union countries,
stressing in particular that the EU was unable to guarantee the
borders of its member states. "The Europe of accountants and
socialists is not worthy of our dreams for the future, for it has no
view of what is happening in its own neighbourhood, it does not
believe in political unification, it cannot exercise a common foreign
policy and is unable to guarantee the borders of its member states,"

2) The Greek Prime Minister

The Greek PM was in the Bulgarian capital for a meeting with his
Bulgarian counterpart Ivan Kostov, as both men called for an
immediate end to the NATO bombings of Yugoslavia and the convening of
a conference of Balkan countries, including Yugoslavia, under
European Union auspices.
"The idea is that in this conference, which would be convened after
commencement of the peace process, all Balkan countries should
participate. If all Balkan countries did not participate, then of
course, it would not have achieved its objective, namely peace,
progress and development for the entire Balkan region," Mr. Simitis
told reporters when asked if Yugoslavia would participate in the
conference.
"This conference, which will have to examine the development of the
Balkans and the stability of the region, following a solution for the
crisis in Kosovo, will aim at creating a economic-political framework
for the Balkans, for the realisation of which all Balkan countries
will cooperate.
"Greece has presented just such a plan to the EU for some time
now...a solution to the Kosovo problem is not enough, there should
also be a general development plan for the Balkans."

3) Police accompany French convoy to border

A strong police force accompanied a convoy of eight French vehicles
and containers to Greece's border with Former Yugoslav Republic of
Macedonia, after the demonstrators the night before
prevented the supplies from reaching the border post. The eight French
multi-purpose military vehicles and 48 containers were forced to
return to the port of Thessaloniki after about 100 protestors near
Polykastro, Kilkis prefecture, blocked their way. The convoy was
headed for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) with
supplies for a French contingent in the small landlocked country.
