Italy needs a dose of Liberalism

ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson was in Rome on Friday, meeting prominent members of various liberal parties to discuss the benefits of them uniting ahead of next year’s European elections.
Sir Graham met first of all with Linda Lanzillotta, Vice President of the Senate for Scelta Civica (Civic Choice). The different political situations Italy is currently facing were top of the agenda, given the renewed threat of an early election. Comments last week by Silvio Berlusconi have led to uncertainty over the future of Enrico Letta’s governing coalition. Sir Graham also had talks with Professor Michele Boldrin, the leader of Fare per Fermare il Declino (Stop the Decline)
Speaking after his morning in Rome, Sir Graham said, “Italy is already in a bad way. Verdi's 'O mia patria, si bella e perduta' has rarely been truer than today. It is desperately in need of a dose of Liberalism.”
